Desert Flower. The Unusual Journey of a Nomad

Waris Dirie, a famous model of Somali origin, tells the story of her journey from the desert to the fashion runways.
One of twelve children, she was born into a nomadic family in Somalia. Life in the desert with camels and goats was not easy, but Waris loved it despite the harsh traditions imposed on women. Waris became a victim of one such tradition — female genital mutilation — at a very young age: she was only five years old. When her father tried to marry her off to a 60-year-old stranger in exchange for five camels, twelve-year-old Waris ran away. Her journey stretched across time and space and proved to be as uneven and dangerous as the land where she grew up.
Waris Dirie’s story is an honest self-portrait of a woman whose spirit captivates as much as her beauty.
