The majestic and spellbinding beauty of the Italian Alps is where Enza, a beautiful and ambitious young woman, first meets Ciro, a sturdy mountain boy. They meet as teenagers, although they grew up in villages just a few miles apart. At the beginning of the last century, when Ciro catches the local priest in a scandalous act, he is driven out of the village and sent to hide in America, where he is to become a shoemaker’s apprentice in Little Italy. Without explaining anything, he leaves a heartbroken Enza behind. Soon, however, Enza’s family falls on hard times, and she too travels to America with her father to secure her future.
Knowing nothing about each other, they both begin new lives in America. Ciro masters the shoemaking trade, while Enza goes to work in a factory in Hoboken, until fate intervenes and finally brings them together. But it is too late: Ciro volunteers for the First World War, while Enza, determined to live independently, builds a remarkable career as a seamstress at the Metropolitan Opera, taking her into the lavish salons of Manhattan and the life of the world-famous singer Enrico Caruso.
Against the backdrop of Carnegie Hill’s grand estates and the cobbled streets of New York’s Italian neighborhoods, the perilous cliffs of Northern Italy, and the raging lakes of northern Minnesota, these star-crossed lovers part and meet again until, at last, the power of love forever changes both their lives.
