"From the Land of Rye and Opium" is an engaging travelogue that reveals the world of 1930s China. Sofia candidly and sincerely shares how she became addicted to opium and witnessed the execution of "pirates."

Yablonska not only observed life in China but also tried to capture it on film. However, due to the Chinese belief that "the solitary gaze of a magical camera can bring illness or even death," she often had to wait for hours, ruin film, and end up with nothing. To be able to work, she rented a space, creating the illusion of a real commercial business, and photographed locals from the window.

"I went to China to see the Chinese, to understand their life, customs, art, and faith," Yablonska wrote in her memoirs.
